Backpacking South East Asia - Thailand - Lesser Known Destinations For Your Thailand Itinerary

Are you planning a backpacking trip to South East Asia? Here are some lesser known destinations to consider when creating your Thailand Itinerary.

Ko Samet - A few hours from Bangkok lies this tiny island getaway. This cozy quiet island, where many Bangkok residents vacation, provides an excellent opportunity to escape the touristy feel associated with most of Thailand's Islands. Ko Samet's lack of commercialization is great for relaxing on the stunning white sand beaches and having a few drinks. If desired, you can stay just meters from the ocean's edge.

Chiang Mai - Far from the beaches of southern Thailand is Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai has plenty to do for every backpacker. Day trips to the surrounding jungle, allow opportunity to visit the native hill tribes. If Thai cooking is your thing, several companies offer day or week long Thai cooking classes. You can also visit an Elephant Camp, where the Elephants perform many tricks, from playing football to painting on a canvas. The Sunday night market, bamboo rafting, and the many stunning temples around Chiang Mai, are some other reason to visit this stunning destination.

Ko Phi-Phi - One of the most stunning islands in all of Thailand is Ko Phi-Phi. This island provided the background for the movie "The Beach" starring Leonardo Dicaprio. Aside from catching some rays on the beach, you can go snorkelling, diving, and even hiking.

Ko Tao - If you interested in learning how to dive in Thailand, then Ko Tao is the place to be. Most backpackers travel to Ko Tao strictly to scuba dive. If you are new to SCUBA diving or looking to obtain diver certification training, you will find many companies offering both of these services on the island. While there, most travellers enjoy the laid back atmosphere, especially after visiting the full moon party on the neighbouring island of Ko Pha-Ngan.

Shortcoming In The Healthcare System In Thailand

As Thailand is becoming a destination for medical tourism, attempts are being made to promote Thai health facilities quite actively. However, the average Thai is not deriving any benefits from the medical tourism as there are certain shortcomings in healthcare and hospital facilities which provide medical treatment to the locals.

Efforts are underway to improve the healthcare system in Thailand but a lot has to be done before we see some concrete results.

The first shortcoming in the healthcare system in Thailand is that there is no primary healthcare system. Most doctors in Thailand are generally specialists. So, it usually becomes difficult to find good general practitioner for minor ailments. If a person is suffering from common cold and cough, a visit to the general hospital means being examined by a doctor who is specialized in one of the medical fields and the doctor may not be able to handle such a small ailment.

However, critics beg to differ. They say they most private and university hospitals have general practitioners and one only needs to ask for them.

The other problem is that most doctors working in hospitals in Thailand do not do so full time. Most physicians and surgeons end up working in several hospitals across Bangkok. Besides this, these doctors also have their own private clinics. Therefore, post-operative care can be a nightmare if you doctor is communicating with the nursing staff on a mobile phone. Another grievance that a Thai patient might have is that he does not see his doctor as often as he would like during his stay in the hospital. And if he does, it is at unusual hours after the doctor finishes his clinics in various other places.

Golf Vacations in Bangkok, Thailand

There can be no finer destination for your golf vacation than the Kingdom of Thailand, with over 260 golf courses and an all year round golfing climate, golf played at a relaxing pace, a refreshment stop every 4 holes, excellent golf caddies, and truly magnificent clubhouses and much more Thailand has got to be at the top of your list for a golf holiday.

Wherever you travel in Thailand you will find magnificent golf courses throughout the kingdom, the most popular regions are Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Kanchanaburi, and you will find championship courses in all of these regions.

Asia as a golfing destination is becoming increasingly popular and Thailand is Asia's leading golf destination, the green fees compared to western rates are inexpensive and there literally 100's of courses from which to choose.

Add to this a wide range of excellent hotels providing all levels of accommodation and a standard of service that is second to none, this combined with excellent restaurants serving fine Thai and Western cuisine at a fraction of the cost you would expect to pay elsewhere.

The Caddy Factor

The one thing that sets Thailand apart from all other Asian golf destinations is Thailand's golf caddies, they add another dimension to your round of golf by providing excellent reading of the greens, they also mark, clean and re-place your ball, you never even have to take your ball out of the cup.

Your only responsibility on the golf course is to hit the ball apart from when you tee-up the ball that of course is after the caddy has handed you the washed ball and the tee. Many of the caddies are beautiful and would be strong contenders in a beauty contest elsewhere.

In short your caddy can add value to your Thailand golfing experience, with their friendly smiles, and fun loving nature they will surely add another ingredient to a pleasurable Thailand golfing vacation.

Bangkok Golf

Bangkok is a modern vibrant city of towering office blocks, ribbons of expressways, teeming traffic and a Skytrain, the elevated mass transit system that threads its way above Bangkok's main thoroughfares. Yet alongside these futuristic trimmings lie the ancient traditions that visitors love so much - glittering temples and palaces, barefoot monks in orange robes, old wooden buildings, and ceremonies like the magnificent Royal Barge procession on the River of Kings.

Bangkok is the business, financial and political centre of Thailand. Yet it remains a fun place to visit; a renowned city of entertainment, cuisine, night markets and shopping for the whole of Asia. Hospitality is legendary. All are welcome and many come.

In Bangkok alone there are over 60 golf courses in the greater Bangkok area, the most popular being Thai Country Club, Alpine Golf Club, Navatanee Golf Club, Amata Springs Country Club, all championship courses that have hosted PGA tournaments.

Summary

No matter where you go in Thailand you will find a host of activities to whet your appetite for adventure, from elephant trekking, river rafting, mountain biking, sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving or just plain sightseeing, whatever you desire you'll find in Thailand.

I have been in the golf tourism business in Thailand since year 2000 and there can be no truer testament to golf in Thailand than the number of clients I have who return year after year to relive their golfing experiences in Thailand.

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu of Thailand

Mae Hong Son city is Thailand's second northern-most provincial city and it is also one of the most sparingly populated cities with a population of just around 300,000. All visitors who come to Mae Hong Son city first go to visit the Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, which is located to the west of the town but on top of a hill. The temple was built by Phraya Singhanatracha, the first king of Mae Hong Son.

The temple has two chedis, which are built in Burmese-style architecture; the larger of the two was built in 1860 while the smaller one was constructed in 1874. Once you reach the temple, you get one of the most panoramic views of Mae Hong Son and you will understand why the city got its name which literally means City of the Three Mists.

At the foot of the Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu is Wat Phra Non. This temple has a 12-meter long reclining Buddha which is built in Thai Yai style architecture. The reclining Buddha was built by Phra Nang Miah, wife of Phraya Sihanatracha in 1875. Another attraction of Wat Phra Non is its two large sculpted lions which stand side by side to provide passage to those who wish to pay homage to the Buddha's relic in Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu.

Just opposite the Wat Phra Non is Wat Kam Ko. This is another old temple of the region and it was built in 1890. The temple is popular for its special architectural feature which you can see right at the entrance. The cover over the entrance arch leads to a wiharn which is built in Burmese style. The temple is a repository of the history of Thai Yai and all the text in the temple is in Thai Yai script.

Thailand Beaches - How to Discover Hidden Beaches in Thailand

There are a million reasons to visit Thailand, such as the tropical rainforest's of the north, the Bridge over the River Kwai to the west in Kanchanaburi or the soft white sand of the beaches to the south to name a few. Many travelers who head south are searching for a perfect paradise, a place with deserted beaches fringed by green palm trees and soft white sand to bury their toes into. The reality however is they will end up on a beach just as packed with tourists as their flight was there.

In southern Thailand you can find many beaches. Some will be packed with tourists, jet skies and banana boat rides while others will be hidden paradise. Now if you want the jet skies and banana boats then things are easy but if you seek out that little corner of paradise then you need to do a little more work. Holiday planning should be the most essential part of any holiday and it should entail more than a visit to your local travel agent to pick up some Brochures.

Here I have listed seven set points, which I think help finding hidden beaches in Thailand.

7 points for the Great Holiday search

Decided what kind of trip you want to break the beach, city or forest. If you want a combination of these, then do the following 6 steps for each goal.
Note down 5 words or phrases in your mind when you come to think of your destination.
Put these phrases in Google or other search enginesmay use and have a look at the first page results, then ignore them.
Move to page 2 and 3 and working your way down ignore hotel booking services and visit the web sites that seem like information pages and have some relevance to your searched term or phrase.
Look for locations on these web pages that maybe you have never heard about or read about and take a note of the name.
Search for this unknown location and take note of the number of pages with the term.
The location with the least number of pages should now be your focus for your next holiday destination.

The Steps In Action:

Just in case you are not aware, I'm in love with Thailand beaches. When i think about them I get images of white sand, palm trees, blue waters, cool breeze and deserted beaches. I put these terms into my chosen search engine, Google for me, and here is what I find.

White sand Thailand returns 2.35 million results moving on to page 2 I ignore hotel booking service sites and see about half way down the page Amazing-Thailand.com - Tropicals Islands in Thailand a quick scan produces two possible locations, Koh Larn and Koh Turatao. The later returns 1,380 results and Koh Larn shows 55,400 pages. I now have my first holiday research place, Koh Turatao.

A word of warning about finding deserted beaches. These areas will often be far from any commercial outlets, medical centers or English speaking locals. This can be paradise when things go good but if the unthinkable happens and you take ill or get injured finding help can be a difficult task, just remember this before you head off into the unknown.

Finally, I would like to ask that in your research you do come across that perfect paradise then please keep it to yourself. There has been many paradise locations spoiled after someone has found it then wrote a post on some travel forums about their experience. Let others find hidden treasures, it You can really do for the best vacation of my life.

Where to Stay in Pattaya Thailand

Pattaya Thailand is located on the southern coast of Thailand. Just a few hours away from Bangkok by taxi and it is as easily accessible by taxi from Suvarnabhumi airport. The taxi drivers will charge you a flat fee of 1500THB to 2000THB which is roughly $45US to $60US. If you can speak a little bit of Thai than you will have a good chance of bargaining the price down. Taxis can be found at the airport or just flag one down in Bangkok.

There are many reasons why someone would vacation in Pattaya though most stay there as a weekend side trip from the main tourist city of Bangkok . But the main reason why hordes of visitors come to Pattaya is to witness and partake in the raucous nightlife that presents itself like a buffet to ravenous survivors on a deserted island. And there are other reasons to visit Pattaya such as for the close proximity to Pattaya beaches. Although officials Pattaya trying to clean up the pollution on their beaches, I recommend you take a trip to the outer islands of Ko Lan. Ko Lan is 45 minutes by boat from one and the island is a paradise for swimmers of most of the beaches in Pattaya may not be ideal conditions for snorkeling and scuba divers. But it is not good for a bit 'kayak and water sports.

Most Popularquestion asked is when is the best time to visit Pattaya. October to February is ideal because the heat and humidity is bearable. But this also means that you will be paying more for accommodations as those months  fall within the high season. So book ahead to get the rooms you want. During the low season you will experience heat and humidity that will certainly make your holiday uncomfortable. Rain will happen in Thailand regardless of the season, but the showers do not last too long.

You will know when you have arrived in the city of Pattaya when you see streets lined with go-go bars, snooker clubs, bars, pubs and clubs. You will certainly know you're there when women pull you this way and that way towards the establishments they work in.  It is a sight that you can't miss especially when the neon lights illuminate the sky and the scantily clad women light up the streets. This is certainly no place for kids but it is not an uncommon sight to see Thai children with their parents walking hand in hand gawking at all the tourist. However you will see often western families wandering around the red light districts with parents covering their children's eyes.

The great thing about Pattaya's assortment of accommodation is that you can be decently far away from all the nightlife scenes or you can be exactly right in the middle of all the action. And what ever budget you can afford, there is no doubt you will find an accommodation that is suited to your pocket book and life style. The general rule of thumb is the more secluded the accommodation is the more expensive the rates will be. There are two main stretch of beaches in Pattaya.  Pattaya Bay which is the largest and most crowded and Jomtien Beach which offers a little bit of seclusion. So keep this in mind when you choose a hotel in Pattaya whether or not you want to deal with the noise or over crowding.

Now, if you are going to Pattaya only to enjoy and experience the nightlife, then you should stay anywhere near or adjacent to Walking Street. You cannot miss this street because this is the major tourist attraction hub. This seedy street is filled with plenty of  outdoor bars, indoor bars, beer bars with Muay Thai matches, disco clubs and a smattering of massage parlors catering to men. Whatever your intentions are of visiting Pattaya you will surely find it on Walking Street. One word of warning though, Walking street can be too noisy and if you don't mind being harassed by Thai transsexuals called lady-boys or drunken tourist then you might want to book your accommodations just a little bit away from there as it can get quite rowdy.

Are you into water sports but don't want to pay big bucks to stay in all inclusive resorts? Kayaks and Jet Skis can be rented on the beach for a very decent price. You can even get an affordable body massage on the beach just a few feet away from the rolling waves. The great thing about vacationing in Pattaya and Thailand overall is that a small budget can go a long way. Beer and food can be had at a very cheap price thanks to the favorable exchange rates.

Pattaya started out as a little fishing village and today it is ending up as a major tourist destination with big name hotels that are standing should to shoulder with mom and pop operations. Rumors of corporate big wigs are trying to move in to spruce up the value of Pattaya. But they will never succeed. Pattaya will always remain one of the best places to party and its unique essence and charm can never be changed.

Overland to Cambodia during the rainy season in Thailand, a great adventure prize

Most people who know, unless you are looking for a spiritual awakening, will not groped the seemingly impossible journey by land from Thailand, Sihanoukville, Cambodia to Bangkok in the rainy season. They, instead, take the boat, affectionately nicknamed the vomit comet on lumpy which is generally faster and allocate less adventurous. The boat should travel with my choice, but with a relatively small category 5 typhoon abuse in central Vietnam, I had to do to make aScheduled flight from the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Typhoons usually a double blow, as the rivers were rising, and so I could forced to back down Phnom Penh and fly to Bangkok.

This journey began with great promise, with the sun shinning, and a few special arrival 15 minutes late. I felt perhaps the ghost tours have been on our side, with a big smile on my face at the edge of town Sihanoukville, where all the drivers on the side of the meetingpointing the way towards the van, laughing uproariously. A short few minutes later I noticed by a passing driver to pull furiously signaling for us to find out our best bald tires was flat all ready!

As the trip started so early, and that a conscientious hiker, I decided to have breakfast, and was looking for a restaurant along the road situated just 10 meters from the machine. I ordered a coffee, have not, then I put the rice soup special, which only by coincidenceFortunately for me, the only thing on the menu. I began to dig furiously on our pit crew to beat in F1 training. One way optimistic, I hoped that I use for a long trip before the next stop, I tried the toilet attraction of this road well, a truly natural wonders, was a tree in a swamp located near a swamp full Pig Pen, with the grunting their inhabitants joyfully raucous approval for my efforts. Without doubt, the poisonous snakes and spiders removed fromTrees enjoyed the show. No problem here with long lines for girls to hang fuss with her make-up.

Here we go again, without sparing time or tires, turn off the paved road and beyond. The road starts in pretty good shape, made with only a couple of holes for the first 10 meters or so, and then start the rough. Apparently our van before the trip was, as the parties maintain that the fall of luck in the bracketsneed to keep them. So we stop more often, to a mixture of witchcraft and rescue rolled wire to keep the road apply.

We make our first crossing of the river homemade contraptions that a ferry would bring sentimental tears to the eyes of a mad scientist who shuttled back and forth on the brown goop. The scenery was so spectacular that one of our passengers fainted and his head slammed into the ground with a thud, as the bass drum. The girl there with glass eyeswas done immediately to put up with her boyfriend, the French began to kiss, and some 'of sex occurs in pat as well, and begins with the cheap sex with her breasts in a parody of the CPR. I trained in this kind of things observed, which was breathing and told to stop them before they explode or implode from the chest or assistance, or consider a hotel room caused embarrassment because they were locals who are not really used strange to westernZion group orgies in public, on ferries, in the middle of the day, but you could see some interest in this activity by young teenagers who were all lined up, money, and chickens in his hand.

Across the River and into the woods, and you go in the jars! Where our spa, where we started, the fare-paying passengers to get a first-class mud slide our van very strong back and forth, flying with different colored clay and stones everywhere. After only10 minutes, you get round the van in the right direction. As a second mobile Woodstock, for the next four hours, we get variations on a topic that is obtained through the hills put put down the hills, you get around cars and trucks stuck all ready, go and put some crews Making Mud Pits construction going deeper and deeper into a serious attempt to make the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest artificial marshes again!

Surprisingly, only 3 hours later than we said we wereArrival at the border of extras seemed terribly wrong by a remake of Lord of the Flies gone. The Thai Customs guys to show us their version of the 4-clock follies and broken in the same ride we started our journey. You must set the value of laughter in a Cambodian adventure like this love, or you might want to take a cheap flight instead.
